Structured literacy approaches

2025 Structured literacy professional and development (PLD) opportunities.

Every child deserves the opportunity to thrive in literacy. Our Ministry of Education accredited structured literacy professional learning and development (PLD) supports schools in implementing evidence-based instruction across years 0–8, ensuring all learners develop strong oral language, reading and writing skills.

Designed for teachers, our comprehensive PLD provide the knowledge, skills, and confidence to embed structured literacy in every classroom. Through interactive workshops, communities of practice (CoPs), and ongoing support, we help you create a consistent approach to literacy that will makes a lasting difference.

Let’s work together to build a strong literacy foundation for every learner.

A connected structured literacy approach

We know that literacy learning is cumulative; students need structured, explicit teaching at every stage of their education. In working with us, you’ll gain a structured approach to literacy that seamlessly progresses through year levels, ensuring your students build on a strong foundation every step of the way.

  • consistency in pedagogy: A school-wide structured literacy framework ensures that all teachers are using aligned, research-informed strategies.

  • stronger professional collaboration: Teachers across year levels share a common language and understanding of structured literacy principles.

  • improved learning outcomes: By embedding explicit teaching methods, we support better literacy achievement for all students.

Our PLD is coherent, cumulative, and developmentally appropriate across the primary and intermediate years.

Structured literacy approaches PLD

Why choose us?

Our structured literacy PLD is:

  • grounded in evidence-based practice – we integrate the latest cognitive science research, ensuring teachers use strategies proven to accelerate literacy learning

  • designed for real classrooms – our approach is practical, engaging, and directly applicable to daily teaching

  • built on a gradual release model – we guide teachers through a structured learning process (I do, We do, You do) to ensure successful implementation

  • culturally responsive and inclusive – using the Niho Taniwha inquiry model, developed in partnership with Dr Melanie Riwai-Couch, we help teachers create literacy-rich classrooms that reflect the identities of their learners

  • differentiated to meet the needs of teachers working in Y0-3, 4-6, 7-8 setting

  • flexible delivery options - face to face or online

  • led by Ministry of Education accredited facilitators – with the support of national literacy specialist, Dr Jane Carroll. We ensure that our programmes meet the unique needs of New Zealand schools.

How our professional learning works

Our structured literacy PLD comprises components that ensure teachers build deep understanding, practical skills, and ongoing professional growth:

  • three full-day face to face interactive workshops: Deep dives into foundational knowledge, structured literacy strategies, modelling best practice.

  • eight online communities of practice: Collaborative learning spaces where teachers activate and share knowledge.

This cycle involves reflection and refinement that reinforces learning and ensures that structured literacy practices are embedded in teachers’ day-to-day teaching.
