Supporting ākonga with autism spectrum disorder: for teachers

Are you looking to deepen your knowledge and capability?

Introduction

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that ranges in severity and affects people across all ethnic and cultural backgrounds. It is estimated that the prevalence of ASD is approximately 1-2% of NZ population, that’s about 1 in 54 young people. ASD influences many areas of life, including communication, behaviour, and social interaction, and can often co-occur with other conditions such as Down syndrome or sensory impairments like hearing or vision loss. While it was once thought to affect boys more frequently, recent research suggests a more balanced distribution across genders.

This course explores what ASD is, the unique characteristics of neurodiverse learners, and environmental factors that may act as triggers. It also provides hands-on strategies to help de-escalate challenging behaviour, support positive interactions, and enhance wellbeing in inclusive classroom settings.
