Supporting ākonga with autism spectrum disorder: for teacher aides

Are you looking for an opportunity to build your knowledge and capability further?

Introduction

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that ranges in severity and affects people across all ethnic and cultural backgrounds. It is estimated that the prevalence of ASD is approximately 1-2% of NZ population, that’s about 1 in 54 young people. ASD influences many areas of life, including communication, behaviour, and social interaction and often co-occurs with other conditions such as Down syndrome or sensory impairments like hearing or vision loss. While it was once thought to affect boys more frequently, recent research suggests a more balanced distribution across genders.

Many teacher aides work closely with ākonga who have ASD. Having the right knowledge and practical strategies is essential to ensure these learners are supported to thrive in inclusive classroom environments.
