Principles and practice: Supporting English language learners

Ko tōku reo, tōku ohooho, tōku reo, tōku māpihi maurea. My language is my awakening, my language is the window to my soul.

This workshop will focus on enduring principles and good practice for supporting English language learners at a range of stages on the English Language Learning Progressions in primary and intermediate school contexts. It will explore ways in which a structured literacy approach can be used effectively to enhance English language learning. There will be opportunities for teachers to share their experience and expertise.

During the course

You will learn with and from others in this interactive workshop. The workshop will focus on building your key understanding and give you loads of practical support that you can start to implement with the students you support. Communication is critical for learning. Many of the students you support speak languages other than English and often require additional support from you so that they can progress in their learning and celebrate success.
