Strong leadership
Establishing a commitment from all stake holders to the direction of the school requires considerable leadership expertise, and often a very different set of skills from those required in teaching.
Once school leaders are able to build relational trust among the members of the school community, teachers experience a strong sense of professional community and are more willing to innovate and take risks. Students make more academic and social progress than they would in a school without relational trust. Parents, whānau and iwi respect teachers who listen carefully to their concerns and teachers respect leaders who listen and are open to reason.
