Accredited facilitator for MoE-funded PLD - See Summary of practice
Joy works as an education consultant out of our Christchurch office. She works with schools in the following areas:
- Assessment for learning
- Teaching as inquiry
- Mentoring and coaching school leaders and leadership teams
- Innovative (modern) learning practices
- Supporting schools moving towards a rebuild
Joy has an incredible depth of expertise in facilitating professional development. She’s worked as a leadership and assessment facilitator for a number of years. Prior to this she specialised in the area of literacy and was the South Island co-leader of the highly successful Literacy Professional Development Project. She’s also worked as a reading advisor, a tutor for LARIC and as a Resource Teacher of Reading.
Joy is currently the president of NZLA (New Zealand Literacy Association). This prestigious appointment involves membership of a number of international literacy organisations. Joy chairs the International Development of Oceania Committee, a standing committee of the International Literacy Association (ILA), and acts as an advocate for the ILA Children’s Rights to Read.
Joy is one of Evaluation Associate’s go-to people around practice analysis conversations and acts of facilitation that really make a difference. She’s worked closely with Helen Timperley and has made this a focus of her professional practice. She has a strong theoretical knowledge of and practical skills in all areas of effective pedagogy. Her facilitation strengths include supporting schools to develop culturally responsive pedagogies and to address the needs of diverse learners. She has expertise in using evidence-informed inquiry to drive change in schools with high levels of under-achievement.
In her spare time Joy loves to travel, usually to the ocean, where she supports her husband with his surf photography. She loves to read and attempts to fit in a weekly Pilates class.
“Rather than come to us with a predetermined path of PLD delivery, Joy has been able to react to what evolves from our discussions and support us from that point. User-driven support. If you are after practical feedback delivered in a supportive and empowering manner from an expert source, I recommend you get in touch with Joy Hawke, Evaluation Associates.”
“She supported teams, modelling reading lessons in each teacher’s classroom, then reinforced and helped them reflect on their own practice. She is approachable, understanding and an expert in her field. Her delivery manner is enthusiastic and responsive. We remain forever grateful for the invaluable work she has done in our school"
"I am pleased to recommend the professional support of Joy Hawke, Education Consultant. Joy worked alongside our staff for over 2 years as we reviewed our NZC Reading and Writing practice. - Professional readings and staff discussions about effective literacy practice.
- Review of leadership and teacher practice using current research and tools and our MOE documents for literacy.
- Reviewed NZC English Guidelines
- Practical planning and teaching ideas
- Improved assessment, moderation and reporting practice.
