Clarity in the Classroom

Clarity in the Classroom, written by Michael Absolum, was published in 2006. It has been received very well by the New Zealand education community. Teachers find it extremely helpful and informative for explaining clearly and simply, with examples, the principles and practices of formative assessment. They particularly appreciate the practical suggestions and strategies for establishing learning-focused relationships with students and developing effective classoom practice.

Clarity in the Classroom is published by Hodder Education and is available from education resource centres around the country. Some schools have purchased a copy for each of the teachers on their staff as an essential teaching resource. The book has recently been published in the United Kingdom.

Research on Student Engagement

In 2009, researchers from Evaluation Associates and Massey University  were commissioned by the Ministry of Education to review the literature to find out more about student engagement and the relationship between academic engagement and student achievement and then to consider what teachers can do to raise levels of student engagement within their classes and schools. The report, written by Robyn Gibbs and Dr Jenny Poskitt, focuses on the middle years of schooling, that is years 7 to 10. The report has recently been published on the Education Counts website. Link to the report here.
